Blanket Help... please! Oh an Sunday...

So Henry has a medium weight Big D blanket... it has not held up AT ALL. I am done doing repairs and am just going to get him a new blanket to take the place of this one when it die dies.

I am looking at the following...

smartpak deluxe high neck turnout blanket

smartpak deluxe turnout blanket

baker turnout blanket

Does anyone have any thoughts? Opinions? Advice?

Henry needs a medium weight blanket as I would prefer not to layer unless it's below 32.

Sunday Bayley and I headed up to the barn to love on Henry. Hubby had to go back to work early so we had the day to ourselves :)

Hack tonight, lesson Tuesday, off Wednesday, lesson Thursday, trainer ride Friday and lesson Saturday.

  1. I highly recommend buying your blankets from Schneiders. Fantastic quality an you can usually get good deals plus they have many different fits. The best part is that I the blanket has an accident (sigh) they have a replacement guarantee!

    1. Thanks! I have found Schneiders to fit me past QH's better then TB's.

  2. I feel your pain. Harley just ripped the butt flap off of his, but I think the Weatherbeeta blanket is still a good one.

    Your daughter has a horsie!

  3. I vote for the Smartpak high neck deluxe blanket. Have had terrible experience with the Bakers, and Smartpak blankets are affordable and pretty darn durable.

  4. The Wug by Rhino is my pick for those hard to fit Thoroughbreds. It's the one sheet that doesn't rub her and it's a high neck.. always a plus! It comes in the medium weight which I think I'm going to buy next year and has held up awesome in this weather! 5. "unless it's below 32 degrees" *snicker*snicker*snicker* Sorry. Had to. ;-)

I'm afraid I can't be of much use to this conversation. The heavy weight blanket I use on Pistol has held up surprisingly well, but to can't for the life of me think of the brand. I will look tonight and see if they make a medium weight one!

  7. I personally love my Rambo Original. I have the heavy weight for our sub zero temps, but the fit is the same for all levels of fill. I much prefer the rambo to the amigo or the rhino in terms of fit and durability. In terms of the ones you mentioned, i'd lean towards the smartpak high neck - I like how the higher necks seem to prevent a lot of water/snow from getting in, plus they seem more secure.

    1. I've found that the Rambo's fit a stalkier horse... do you find that? I don't have much experience with them...

  8. Smartpak blankets are great and I really, really, really liked mine bbuuttt it rubs Charlie's shoulders. I've found the horseware blankets do not - Smartpak blankets seem to be modeled after Weatherbeetas. If you think that style will work for Henry, Smartpak blankets are a fantastic value.

    1. Hmmm good things to think about. I have only ever used Big D, Baker and a Tuff Rider that I am not super stoked on... not sure how Weatherbeetas would fit him.

  9. Wish I could help with the blankets. The one that seems to fit Libby the best are the Bakers. I'd try the SP ultimate since it has the 10 yr guarantee, so even if it doesn't hold up, you can just send them back for a new one!

    1. I think I am leaning towards the high neck one but always love Baker too!

  10. Amigo, Rhino or Rambo. Do not buy anything else! I have my Rambos that are 7 years old, on my very hard to keep blanketed horses.

Bucas are also amazing..but very expensive.

I have a Baker, its nice but the straps have both broken.

    1. Do you find that the Amigo, Rhino or Rambo's fit a more stalky horse?

  11. I dig the Tack of the Day brand blankets, mine have held up amazing (of course you have to wait for them to come up, but if they do, get one!) I also really love the new one I got from Bit of Britain - it's a light blue plaid pattern - that's how you'll know which one it is, lol, helpful, right?!?!

  12. I just got Prairie the smartpak high neck turnout (medium) and I've been THRILLED with it. She typically wears Pessoa, Rambo or weatherbeeta and the Smartpak is totally up to snuff. Also it's cut really well and sits on their neck nicely. Looks sharp :)

  13. Cuna goes in Amigos and I've never (knock on wood) had any rubbing problems from Mr. Sensitive.

  14. The tack of the day blankets wear like iron - my trainer has a few. As for mediums Houston has an Amigo XL and a Weatherbeeta Taka Detach a neck (both have neck covers that can be removed). We have had a few Bakers in the barn that lasted a really long time - also so classy! No experience with the smartpaks but that or Rambo will probably be my go to for Houston's next blankets. I love the horseware fit for Hue but he hasn't gotten rubs from either of his blankets yet.

Good luck with your search! :)

    1. Yeah Bakers are totally classy!

Just trying to find out what others like and use :)

Thanks for the advice! I want something that will work well for him as well as look good :)

  15. I don't have personal experience with any of those blankets, and while I think Bakers are beautiful I would go with the SmartPak turnouts. They all have guarantees and if he's tough on blankets you know they will replace the blankets if he kills them.

  16. I know you already received tons of advice on the blankets - aren't blog friends the best? I got lots of good comments when I asked for help in regards to a new sheet for Riva - going to go with the Amigo (lots of good reviews!)

You daughter is simply adorable :)

  17. Ohh I LOVE the Bakers! They are the best.
But right now my boys are both wearing Amigo's... they fit them really well, but aren't the most durable.

  18. I've had good luck with the smartpak brand! I bought one that lasted for about five years, until some rats got into the storage bag and ate it up! I'd also go with a high neck. I've caught wiz shivering a few times from where the rain gets in around his shoulders and gets him cold. Unfortunately I just spent all the money I bought for a blanket, but for next season I'll be buying one with a hood or high neck!

    1. Awesome thanks! I am really liking the high neck :) We don't have snow here but with the wind and rain I think it is the best choice! :)

  19. Can't comment about the SmartPak blankets, but I do like the Rider's International NorthWind turnouts. They are super durable, but mine do rub, so I use a shoulder cover. Happy Shopping!
