Blog Hop: Bit It Up

Monday Henry had some turn out in the am and then I lunged him after work. It was SO windy ...

Mid spook/buck lol
Crazy wind= crazy horse!
He finally chilled out...
Yep love this horse!

Onto the blog hop!!

What do you ride your horse in?

I would like to prefiss this with- Henry has a mouth of steal and is SO heavy.. I  have soft hands so that I can have the bit I need when needed- but not hang on him or make matters worse.

Currently Henry goes in a full cheek twisted snaffle or a mullen mouth pelham...

In the past we have used...

Mikmar

Segunda

Elevator

Gag

I have also tried a Wadaford, Slow Twist D and Full Cheek and a few others. He isn't bad in the lesser bit by any means but when I need brakes or to half half to a fence or in a line I have NOTHING to work with... and this isn't a training issue :)

  1. I will be putting Loki in a stronger bit after our last show. Definitely nice to be able to have soft hands and brakes when you need them than to be fighting the entire ride!

    1. exactly! :) I know some people are into only snaffles but that doesn't work for all horses :)

  2. Haha some of those look scary! But we have to do what we have to do to get them to listen to us, right? :)

    1. Yep and it's not like he is bad but when I need the response I need it it's not a suggestion lol!

  3. That Mikmar looks so much scarier outside of the horses mouth lol. Henry really has one of the hardest mouths i've seen, equal to old rent string horses. And he's always been that way since you first got him.

  5. Whoa- that Mikmar! But do agree- best to have a bit of a stronger bit (haha) and only use it occasionally than to have a softer bit but keep hardening the mouth :)

    1. Yes.. and obviously these were all for short times- part of training, not a permanent fix :)

    1. Henry is really heavy, that bit helps him (and me lol) a lot for the short time we used it :)
