Henry the Hunk!

We lead an exciting life these days... let me show you...

Bahahaha :)

Good news: he's looking less chubby! :)

Another lunge tonight- woo hoo lol!

On another note: Flies

How do you/your barn manage flies?

What is your fav fly spray?

What are your fly sheet rules? (when is it too hot for the fly sheet)

What are your fav fly protectant products?

This year they spread a TON of manure down by the mare motel and I am dreading what it is going to be like :(

Here is Henry's get up... the leg protection died so I need to get a new set :)

  1. We started using Shoo Tags a couple years ago and they cut down on the amount of fly spray needed. They are like little credit cards that use the horses energy to keep flies and mosquitoes away. We use Pyrhana or Natures Defense mixed with vinegar for fly sprays. As for fly sheets, we use them no matter the temps. We might take of the non textilene ones if it rains. As for fly control, we just try to keep our smaller pens clean of manure and dump well away from turnouts.
    He is looking great!

  2. I tell you what - Apple Cider Vinegar (with the Mother) is great - I start top-dressing her feed (1/4 2x day) and it helps a ton. Currently my barn spreads manure in the fields so it dries up pretty quickly and keeps the fly population down. In my previous barn we had the manure hauled away and that helped too. I love the Amigo Bug Buster for Dassah and should probably invest in fly leg-wear for her (the stomping is so bad for her hooves). That said, most places here - Ohio-switch to night-time turnout during the summer (as my barn will) - and that helps too. Although I think I read somewhere that the sugar content in grass is higher at night (have NO idea where I got that). Even still, I prefer her to have her fly sheet on when outside, regardless of time of day.

    1. Apple Cider Vinegar on their feet? Interesting I'll have to try it! Does it dry them out?

  3. My barn puts down fly predators which aren't cheap but are so worth it. I personally didn't think they were too pricey when we used them at my parents but I guess it's all in the eye of the beholder.

Also I use deo lotion for fly spray. They have a gel/ cream you can apply too.

  4. What a gorgeous evening sky!

Barely into winter and I'd forgotten all about flies! We don't really get 'problem' flies apart from Bots in NZ, but I always find citronella mixed into the horses' coat shine spray never hurts (I always google the correct ratio of citronella with the spray) and I LOVE the smell of it, even if the flies don't.

Reading the above comments, makes me really appreciate that we don't get so many flies. Fly predators? Crazy :-)

    The Hunk is looking amazing!!

  5. I don't have a favorite fly spray. It seems like none of them really last very long anyways. Loki stays in during the day and that seems to help.

    1. Yes agree, I feel like none of them really help!

Henry lives in the "mare motel" and they spread manure down by them which is frustrating blah!

  6. Pyrhana is what I use. I also diligently clean his feed buckets (with white vinegar and water) to help keep flies away. Another gal at the barn uses the penny-in-ziplock-bag-of-water trick. Not sure if it helps tho..

    1. Like his grain bucket or where his hay goes?

I clean his stall every day (on top of the guys cleaning it as part of board), he has a separate hay feeder and then I feed him his grain in a bin that I take up when he's done.

I always put up those bag things that attract flies around Henry's stall and I think that others are going to get some too that board down there so that we can help minimize the flies. Hopefully it helps!

  7. I like Pyrhana Wipe N Spray fly spray :-)

  8. Henry is so gorgeous. We don't really have a fly problem here in NZ, so just a simple flysheet is usually enough.

  9. I am currently using Eqyss Canadian Marigold horse spray which is all natural and can be used on humans too. Active ingredients are clove and rosemary. So far seems to be working well. I was using Bronco before but all the warnings on it terrified me. ;-)
