Worming Schedule

Thursday it was a bit cooler and Henry had a trainer ride. I wasn't able to make it out and they said he was a bit fresh but got a good ride :)

Friday he had a day off and got some good turn out.

Saturday Henry got some turn out and then I lunged him. It was hot and he was sweaty so I gave him a quick hosing.

Happy it's Saturday!

Sunday and Monday Henry just got some turn out.

Monday it was 98 deg at 10 am. 3.5 more weeks of being prego and that heat do not mix lol!

B and I went to the tack store though and got a few goodies :)

So ugly but so useful!

Also got some wormer :) I typically buy one of each kind and then rotate through them. I worm about ever 2 months so these will last me about a year..

How do you all handle worming?

Starting tomorrow, Henry is in half training so this week he is going to get ridden Tues and Fri. :)

  1. I rotate as well. Except that I do my last worming in Dec/january (for tape) and then noting until May. We won't have worms winter and into spring.

  2. With Ghazal I rotate with whatever my sister wants me to use. With Loki we've been having the vet do fecal counts. He's only needed wormed once in the past year but the fecals aren't exactly cheap so it isn't like it really saves me any money.

    1. I have thought about doing a fecal count just to see :) Might have to do it!

  3. I have it on my wish-list to get one of those visors (next tack shop trip). They are ugly, but worth it to protect your skin in the long run. :)
I just use the yearly wormer packs from Valley Vet: http://www.valleyvet.com/ct_detail.html?pgguid=584eb085-1ac4-4111-b25c-a5e25af4b8c7&ccd=IGO043&gclid=CJzwsbXdor8CFas-MgodhTYADA
Love it because it's cheaper than buying each individual wormer and the pack comes with a little paper that tells you what to give when based upon high season for whatever each is better at killing. It's a 2 month span between wormers, too. :)

    1. I have thought about buying that but always just grab a variety at Western Saddlery lol

  4. I used to do what you do, but the last few months pony is living on a quiet farm with a buddy and no other horses in or out of the (abundant) pastures. She's due for her teeth in the fall so we'll reevaluate the deworming schedule with the vet then. He's more of a 'less is more' type guy.

    1. Oh nice! Horses are always in and out at our barn so I am religious about worming him.. not to mention the barn across the street loves to share what they have with us too and they host a LOT of ropings.

  5. I use a bimonthly worming rotation schedule my vet sent me.

  6. I fecal test every 3 months, and only give wormer if Hemie is positive, and the wormer I give is determined based on the test results. It actually is very affordable - only $15 per test from http://www.horsemenslab.com/.

    1. I'll have to look into it.. we haven't had any worm issues thankfully!

  7. I'm like Sarah - I fecal test (but I only do it twice a year, which is what my vet recommended) and I only worm when I need to based on the results. My vet suggested it because apparently some horses become immune to worming. I think your vet would have lots of suggestions about wormer regardless

    1. He says what I am doing is great :) We have never had any worm issues, I was just wondering what others did... we have a lot of in and out at the barn and the barn across the street and I haven't had any issues (praise the Lord!!) yet cause I am all over it lol!

  8. oh...I would not worm so often. Usually only worm when you need to and for what you need - they have now discovered horses can become tolerant to wormer and then it has no effect.

I usually do a fecal to see - or worm every 4-6 months. Some horses are higher shedders, and they need to be wormed more often. The best thing is to turn out the high shedders together, and the low shedders together. Low shedders may only need to be wormed once a year. Pasture maintenance and fecal tests are the way to go.

    1. Well being that I board and don't have control over who gets turned out where or the pasture maintenance (or absolute lack of, yeah they don't do anything to them) ... I have found that this covers our bootie :)

Not to mention people are trailering in and out ALL.THE.TIME from our place and the place next door and SO MANY things get shared... thankfully Henry has stayed healthy and hasn't caught all the crap that lots of other horses have :)

  9. I do fecal tests and only worm when needed based on the advice of my vet. Apparently we over worm and horses are becoming immune. I have that visor and LOVE it!
