Do you do your own stunts?

So I was wondering- for you personally, when do you draw the line for enough is enough with your horses or a horse you are ridings shenanigans?

Is it after the first buck or big spook, after falling off or a dirty stop, after a broken finder or leg?

Or do you not have a point and you are willing to deal with whatever because you love your precious Pookie? ;)

As I get older my desire to put up with crap has become shorter, thankfully Henry is really a solid citizen now and I don't have to deal with much :)

  1. I do my own stunts. If I can't handle it... I have very little faith in any one else. Not to sound so conceited, I just have infinite patience and kindness and second chances when it comes to quadrapeds. It is actually more a flaw.

    1. Hey patience isn't bad as long as you are safe :)

  2. I do all of my own stunts that I know I'm capable of handling. I always feel bad if I have to hand my horse over to someone else, there's something about getting the horse over it myself that makes me feel good. Red has thrown a few bucks (thankfully no rears haha) and bolted with me a few times (Once through the woods and that was AWFUL lol) and I've been on some horses that had some wild moments, but I know my limit. Luckily my butt seems to be fairly sticky.

  3. I do most of my own stunts, but I also own a pony who doesn't pull too much crap! I can sit every buck he's thrown, he doesn't bolt or rear, and his spooks are pretty mild. If I had to deal with that kind of nonsense every ride, I'd sell the horse. ;)

    1. Yeah this is how I feel too, I can deal with some but if it's chaos every ride no thank you. Heney has his moments but they are far enough btwn that I forgot lol!

  4. I do my own but like Henry, Pongo's are very few and far between. If I'm needing to rehab him, I do it because I know that sparkle in his eye or pouty puff better than anyone and know when to ace or try again tomorrow for example. With that said I don't plan on starting any noobs or greenies any time soon again or riding other people's nut job horses so I'm kinda of avoiding stunt work intelligently as best as I can ;). I also have that stunts bumper sticker on my trailer!!

  5. I used to do all of my own stunts and have the lingering issues from old injuries to prove it. These days, I draw the line at anything that feels like it has intent. Bucking and spooking are fine, but a dirty buck with a twist designed to toss me or a spin with a shoulder drop? No thanks. I can find another ride.

    1. I think that's a big part of what to tolerate once you get older and less fixable. Stating their opinion/fear/annoyance is different than trying to dump you in the dirt for no good reason.

  6. I'm interested to hear others thoughts on this subject. While I do some of my own stunts, so to speak, there's also a lot I won't put up with. I don't do rearing, at all, period.

  7. I used to do my own stunts, but now that I have a very bad back injury that has never/will never heal fully, I just can't. I hire others or recruit my husband.

  8. I still do all my own stunts; I figure if I'm going to ride this horse, I might as well ride! That being said, if someone else had a horse they wanted me to ride "stunts" on, I'd politely decline.

    1. Yeah I think your own vs others are a big difference.

  9. I do my own stunts... But it's Tucker. Yes he'll buck and yes I've fallen off. But I feel relatively 'safe'. I'm not sure that I'd do my own stunts on just any horse. I'm with you. I'm past that point in life where I want to deal with the truly crazy and out of hand stuff myself.

    1. Right, totally expect things here and there ... just not nasty stuff :)

  10. It depends wildly on the horse for me, Rico yes, TC most of the time. For the most part though, I would say no. I used to do my own stunts and other peoples' stunts when I was a full time trainer. Now I'd prefer to hand that role off to someone else.

    1. Yeah I know my trainer won't let me be in a bad spot and if she thinks I can ride through stuff i gotta man up and do it!

  11. I do my own. I draw that line when it's something that I can't deal with effectively and so could make it worse. that is fairly rare.

  12. Depends on the horse. If it's feel good, "we're just having fun" stunts I'm fine. If it's panicky, brain has left the building stuff, maybe I'll persist but choose my environment. If it's "I don't wanna do this and will pick a huge fight/ I want my rider off NOW" stunts then I say no.

  13. generally i like to do all the work myself - stunts included. but i'm not above walking away from a horse when the time comes (tho usually it takes me a while to figure it out lol). i try to draw the line when a horse's way of going changes my riding for the worse, such that i can't successfully ride other horses to the best of my ability any more

  14. I don't want to be responsible for what my ass of a horse could do to someone else.

  15. I do my own stunts with trainer on the ground. She gives me incredible confidence that I wouldn't have on my own

    1. So well said, that is exactly how I do it too.. trainer wouldn't let me do stuff if I wasn't capable. Most of the time she has more confidence in me then i do lol!

  16. I have a bad back too, but still ride through whatever the horses do. Generally it's just spooks or balking or the occasional pogo stick jump. I don't think I'd own a horse that is prone to bucking. Surprising rearing me didn't bother me as much as buckers.

  17. Hm, I don't really have any limits with Sydney. Not any more, at least. It use to be that I would turn her over to my friend as soon as she started acting out. Then I moved her to a different barn, and couldn't hand her over any more so I learned to deal with it. I know that she has the ability to throw a nasty buck, but for the most part I can stick with her. Now that her PSSM is being managed, her spooks are pretty non existent.

    1. I think that the issues get addressed quicker and more efficiently if mom isn't involved- especially when the pro can ride better. I am always ok enlisting the pros when need!
