Day 1: My Horse

First off.. if you don't already follow Nicku and Pongo, you should! Oh and she's going to do a contest sooooo I don't have alternate motives at all :)

Last night was hack night. I got Henry, groomed slowly since no one was at the barn and I don't like riding when no one is around, Kat came as I was putting the last of my tack on- woo hoo! Did a little lunge and got on.

I had an open and freshly groomed arena- this isn't our arena, I wish!

Today we work on transitions - up and down. Mondays Henry is always special so I knew it would be *fun*

Warmed up walking a bit and then went into a trot giving him a little more contact but he lost those privileges pretty fast as he decided spooking and his head in the air were more fun. So to work we went...

I basically just went around through the paces (w t c) and added in transitions all over the place... we even did some halt to canter and canter to halts, trot to halt and halt to trot.

He was really really heavy on the left rein- i tried giving him nothing to hang on, that didn't work so I ended up lifting my left rein and once he gave I gave.. that helped a little but I wasn't going to pick at that much cause the transition work was enough picking for one night :)

We were both SO sweaty and pooped so we walked for a bit while Kat cantered and chatted.

Hosed Henry off (including a man part washing), cleaned my stuff and took him home with his grain.

Day 1: My Horse
Hack tonight, off Wednesday, hack Thursday, turn out Friday, hack Saturday.

  1. YAY Yes, Follow Us! www.eyeonthehorse.blogspot.com! Sounds like a good ride! I try to engage Pongo's hind more when he hangs like that. Also I use lots of changes of bend/direction. He gets so mixed up with the changes that he forgets to hang on me :)

    1. I swear he has no feeling in his mouth!!

Yeah it was a good ride... I had to really support him at the beginning but by the end he was sharp with all that I was asking! :)

  2. I'm so jealous of your schedule. :)) What I would give for the ability to schedule my rides! Lol!!
Annnnddddd, you just reminded me Red's...ehemm....needs to be....washed again. :P Or I COULD wait until the vet comes out and sedates him to do it. ;) I'm going with the latter.

    1. Haha girl working full time, being a mom and having a hubby with a crazy work schedule I HATE to schedule every min at the barn! :)

Henry loves his man parts cleaned so no vet needed here :) I do it once a week cause he gets ridden so much and needs it :)

    2. I hose Red's belly off a lot since he's ridden quite a bit and then sweats so easy, but he HATES anyone getting near it so it's hard. Lol!! Sedation is necessary. ;)
That would be a downside, just having to make sure you are home on time, etc.

    3. Funny how some love it and others don't!!

Yep my time is very scheduled :)

  3. Alex is not super fond of having his man parts cleaned... he likes to "threaten" by lifting his leg at me, but has yet to actually try to kick me. A full cleaning, takes a fair amount of Ace ;-)

    1. Henry's head goes down and his parts relax... Homeboy likes it a lot!! I guess I'm thankful cause that means I can keep it clean :)

  4. I already follow Nicku! Nothing like a freshly drug arena.

  5. I love being the first to ride in a freshly groomed arena! Harley appreciates being cleaned, too. Saves me money since I do not have to pay the vet or sedate him. :-)

    1. I love making tracks in a fresh arena too!

Yep I guess I am grateful that Henry is ok with it cause then I can clean it often and it's free! lol

  6. He always makes the cutest faces! I hate when they get heavy on one side and no matter what you do they won't stop hanging!

  8. Its really hard to get a horse 'off' the reins sometimes. It can be so frustrating. Love that pic of the arena.
