What a Weekend!!!

2009 Rodeo on Speedy

Wednesday night, B and I went to the mixer.

Thursday night, all three of us went to family night.

Picked out her own cowboy hat and rocked it!

My friend and her dad roping at Family night

Friday was a trainer ride, Henry was really good.

Saturday was a lesson for me. Got to the barn, got Henry, tacked up and got on. It was hot so I opted out of lunging. It was just Clare, Mona and me.

We flatted around, Henry was up but nothing bad. The wind was KILLER and the heat was extreme.

We went outside so that I could jump. Warmed up over a little line and then went to the rainbow oxer and the in an out. I was seeing nothing and getting Henry to the base of EVEYTHING. Had a moment where I was thinking I couldn't do it- then sucked it up and got more pace to the jumps and bam it worked. Jumped the oxer three times well and then my trainer said good and zoomed off in the golf cart. We turned around to see the hill of fire...

As I was finally leaving in the afternoon

Not exactly how I wnated to spend my Saturday. I had my "other mom" ready to come pick Henry up and take him to their house.

I cleaned Henry up, helped move the horses from the back hill pastures and then waited...

Boarders stared to show up and were frantically asking what was the plan... um yeah we were all wondering the same thing.

Question: Does your BO have a plan for fire? Or other situations like that? I knew since my trainer was there that we were "taken care of" but I found it unsettling that there wasn't a barn plan and the BO/BM were no where to be found till well over 2 hours after everything "started".

Once all was cleared, I put Henry and Louie back in their stall, filled waters and went home.

Went out around 9 pm that evening to make sure that all was still well.

Sunday I spent from noon on at the rodeo helping out with flags and warming up horses for people :)

Monday hack, Tuesday lesson, Wednesday off, Thursday idk, Friday trainer ride, Saturday lesson.

  1. Eek. Having a fire that close must so scary. I remember how easily that land catches fire though, I grew up in Discovery Bay :)

  2. SO scary!! Thankfully here in TN we don't get a lot of fires where I live..we tend to be drenched with rain. But, I have heard that the horses would be trailered to a safe place. I haven't boarded there very long and honestly haven't asked..You've reminded me that I need to!

  4. Wow that is super scary about the fire. My current BO had a barn fire at her last place so she is much more cognizant of the hazards but as far as a plan to move horses I think a lot of that falls on the individual owners. It's definitely one of the reasons I hate not having my own trailer even though my sister's is just 20 minutes away. I would definitely take my horse to her place in the event of a fire.

Oh and can I just say that Henry is a stud muffin!

    1. Yeah I have someone who could come get Henry and if they are gone there are other people i could call or ride Henry down the road lol!!

I was just expecting like someone to inform all the boarders or something- as they showed up there were only two of us there and we didn't even really know what was going on.

  6. My old barn had a plan and they actually had to evacuate twice. My trainer had everything under control and handled things great. Glad the fire didn't get to the barn!

    1. Thankfully my trainer was there cause she totally kicked into action!! But she was in the thick of it all so she wasn't able to direct anything down at the barn.

BO and BM need to come up with a plan! There are 4 trainers worth of people and independent boarders who need to know the plan!

  7. Oh my gosh - I never really thought about it! Our old boarding barn had a sprinkler system and alarms, plus rear stall doors to open from the outside to let all horses out. Will have to check at the new barns! Glad all is well at your place!

    1. Thanks! Yeah I have no idea what they would do. I am glad Henry is outside tho cause he could probably jump his paddock if needed or push through the hot tape.

  8. I would be frantic with a fire that close, but then again, a fire in FL is not really normal. Glad everyone was safe!

    1. Oh man you should have texted me, I would have come and said hi! I was down by the flags :)

Yeah sadly I am not surprised that we have no plan.

  10. I lived through a bunch of big fires in the area when I was in NV. It is scary! It was even more scary before I had my own trailer. Glad things were okay.

  11. That fire is terrifying. I don't know if my barn has a fire plan as that does not tend to happen a lot around here (KNOCK ON WOOD), but my last barn before I owned Walker burnt to the ground in 45 minutes one night in a freak accident. A 17 year old girl saved all the horses but 3 all by herself while it was collapsing around her. Unfortunately, her horse died in the fire :( I think a plan for any kind of emergency, fire or something else, is probably a smart thing for a barn to have.

  12. Oh wow, when I was reading I got to your question... and that's a good one! I wonder if our BO even has a plan? Is that something that is bad to ask? as in rude? ... I work for a software company and we have to have a "disaster recovery plan"... barns SHOULD have this, too. Thank brings me to another question. Should instructors of children on horseback have CPR certification? I would think if I had kids, I would want this... just like now i'm thinking about how I want the BO to have a plan!
