To Helmet or Not

Helmets-

Do you follow the get new after it's been 5 years from the manufacture date?

Do you replace after ever fall?

Do you wear a helmet?

Whats your brand of choice?

Whats your thoughts on helmets?

I am a CO lover and I replace after the 5 years are up. I ride on average 4 days a week, sometime more sometimes less... so after those 5 years I figure it has seen enough sun and taken a beating. I always ride Henry in a helmet, especially when I am jumping... I figure why not.

  1. I also love CO, but I haven't had mine long enough to replace it after 5 years.
I have dropped it once or twice (not badly), but not replaced it as they say to do. I don't think dropping the helmet (unless its from a super high distance onto concrete) warrants a replacement.
I also haven't fallen on a helmet either. I don't know if I would replace it unless I personally felt the trauma to the helmet required replacement.

  2. I'm also a CO lover. I will typically replace a helmet after 3 years + a fall (or two). If I fell really hard on a brand new one, I'd replace.

  3. I wear a helmet 98% of the time, regardless of what I'm doing. I don't like COs because I think they make my head look super weird; I am a fan of the way One Ks look on me!

The only time I've replaced a helmet after a fall was a few months ago after Gina fell on me at the hunter pace- I knocked my head pretty hard in what was already a three year old helmet!

  4. i try to stick to the 5 yrs/ bad fall (where head is included) rule, but will be very sad to part from my current oneK if it's still in good shape at 5 yrs. then again i might be guilty of hanging on to things a little too long - and rode in a cracked helmet for far too long as a broke college student... definitely don't recommend that!

  5. I am due for a new helmet this year. I have a CO right now that I really love, but I want to try the OneK on too, because I like how it looks on other people. I wear mine every time I ride... with very few exceptions. I did recently hop on bareback to let him graze without one, which was a calculated risk, given that he was basically stationary. I would understand someone making the argument that I should have one on then too though, you never know.

  6. I had a GPA that I loved as a junior, but I think my head shape changed and now I'm a big CO fan. My wallet was pretty grateful for that. If I were to fall directly on it then I think I'd replace it pretty quickly, but despite how many times I've fallen (I lost track after 30 when I was in high school), I never seem to hit my head. Broken plenty of bones and bruised myself all over, but I never ever knock my noggin! I wear mine every single time I'm on a horse, no matter what. If I have to take it off to get a sweatshirt off, I'll dismount to do it. I trust my horse completely, but I'm a big weenie and I'm so positive that the one time I take it off for 10 seconds will be the one time my horse spooks!

  7. Always wear my helmet - I have had my CO for 4 years and will replace it at 5 yrs. Never fallen with it (knock some wood!). It is a little stretched out though - my daughter has borrowed it a few times and she wears a larger size than me. I also have a CO that I won at Rolex last year but use it only for shows and lessons.

  8. Do you follow the get new after it's been 5 years from the manufacture date?
I've not yet had a helmet that long (having lost helmets or getting a new one because the old one had worn and didn't fit anymore or getting a new one I liked better)
Do you replace after every fall?
Not every fall, but if I land on my head hard I do
    Do you wear a helmet?
Yes, don't like the idea of someone having to change my nappy if I become a vegetable
    Whats your brand of choice?
Charles Owen, they fit me the best and look classy
    Whats your thoughts on helmets?
I don't understand why anyone would not wear it, it just makes no sense to me.

  9. I'm on the other end of the spectrum. I don't have a helmet. I ride western, and helmets aren't as prevalent with western riders. I know that isn't an excuse to risk my noggin, but aren't any places around here to go try them on, and I have a tiny head. I wear a kid's size in western hats. So even if I find one that doesn't feel SUPER loose on me, it looks really weird. :/ I am a pretty cautious rider, my horses aren't particularly spooky, and I don't jump, so while it is less likely for me to hit the ground, I do realize that it is possible. I would like to buy a helmet, I just haven't really gotten around to it.

  10. I've never had a helmet last 5 years, but yes, I would replace it. I always replace after a fall if I land on my head. I always wear a helmet. I think I have a tipperary helmet - I don't really have a favorite brand. It bothers me when people ride without helmets - it's just not worth the risk.

  11. Speaking from experience with 2 head injuries from stupid falls WITH a helmet on, I never ever ever would get on any horse for any reason without one - yes even on vacation trail rides and stuff. The worst injuries I've had weren't jumping high or galloping hard, but doing normal stuff, usually walking around, on horses I knew very well. It's just not worth it and even a mild concussion can jack you up for a long long time. Rant over. I love my CO. I replace more often than 5 years because they just get gross when you ride several times a week. Plus with 20% off sales on International Helmet Awareness Day every year, why not replace it a little more often. I replace after a fall if I've clocked my head on the ground.

  12. I think that everyone should wear a helmet, every ride. I understand hopping on to take a few pictures without one every once in a while, but I don't agree with doing much more than that without a helmet. I am diligent about replacing my helmet every 5 years or after a fall where I hit my head. I think it's really important to protect my most valuable asset -- my mind.

  13. I'm 80% always wearing a helmet. 95% on Brantley. Well more like 99%... Replacing helmets after falls... I'm terrible replacing and getting rid of old helmets as it is. I definitely need to replace my Tipperary BUT I will probably hold on to it.

  14. Both my parents are neurologists, so they drilled helmets and seatbelts into me. GPAs fit me the best. I tried on Samshield and CO, but they were AWFUL. I had the Titium, and after 5 years I replaced it with the new EVO +, which is freaking awesome! I can actually feel the wind in my hair while I ride. Big deal for a head-sweater like myself.

    1. Wind in hair sounds awesome in summer months, but in winter its kinda nice having a warm helmet

    2. LOL, I'm an equal opportunity weather head-sweater, so it doesn't make any difference to me. It can be cold and rainy and I still have damp hair when I get off. So grody...

  15. I pretty much wear one all the time if I'm in a hunt seat saddle. I'm admittedly bad about wearing them if I'm riding western, mostly on Lucy. I'm also known to do stupid things like ride her bareback, backwards in cutoffs though too, so...
I came off and managed a decent concussion this spring XC schooling and I replaced mine after that. It was almost 5 years old too, so the timing was right. Could have done without the concussion though.

  16. I don't replace after every fall because usually I don't even hit my head and replacing it because I fell on my bum feels a little excessive... that being said, I almost always wear it and I do replace if it's been a long time or I hit my head hard.

  17. I wear one every ride. I replace after falls where I hit my head, even a little bounce (not if I land on my feet). I've never had a helmet last me 5 years (I fall off too often lol). I wear Ovation helmets because it fits my head, is adjustable for my hair poofiness, and is priced affordably.

  18. I always wear a helmet. I wore my GPA way past the five years and didn't even realize it for way too long. I'd never taken a fall in it, but I did spend all of that time with it being just tight enough to give me headache. So, I spent a couple of years riding in a helmet that needed to be replaced practically making me go cross-eyed from being too tight. Not my brightest moment. Anyway, I bought a One K to school in and will probably buy a Samshield to show in. I'm done with GPA and CO looks horrible on me, even though I love them.

  19. Do you follow the get new after it's been 5 years from the manufacture date? I've always followed 3 years. Maybe multiple guidelines going around? Either way, I also leave my helmet at the barn in the heat/cold and wear it pretty much daily so I'm sure it degrades faster.

Do you replace after ever fall? I would

Do you wear a helmet? Yes. Sometimes I won't for just walking around on Phoenix, but I try to be realistic that anything can happen and wear it 99.9% of the time.

Whats your brand of choice? Samshield is my current favorite although I would have like it if the One K had fit. I also don't mind IRH even though it's a less popular brand.

Whats your thoughts on helmets? Necessary for our protection
