Hey Counter Canter

I don't feel like being at work today so i keep telling myself "just keep working, just keep working" ... Finding Nemo for the win!

I had a good hack last night... Just flatted and I planned to work on some counter canter. My trainer was there which was good since I wanted her help with the counter canter (if needed).

I also was inspired my by buddy GM to do some no stirrup work :) If he can do 20 min of it, I CAN do some. Not 20 min but I will get there... I think MAYBE I did 10 min with one small walk break but I have to start somewhere right?!

Anywho I didn't lunge cause someone had turned her horses out in the round pen... keep in mind these horses LIVE IN PASTURE and the owner NEVER RIDES! Seriously people, some of us actually ride our horses and have horses that live in a stall- there is NO NEED for your horses who live in pasture to be turned out in a round pen.

Got on and went to work, Henry was a doll! Hacked around. No stirrups. Counter canter... he was AWESOME to the left (right lead) and a little sticky to the right (left lead) but we will get there. I think he has only counter cantered like 3 or 4 times so I am proud!

Cooled out, pulled more mane, cleaned up, grained and put him away.

Thanks C for taking my pic :)

Lesson tonight, maybe a hack Wednesday, lesson Thursday, trainer ride Friday, lesson (maybe if it doesn't rain, if it rains the clinic get the indoor) Saturday.

  1. If thats the side he has a hard time getting the lead change on thats why the counter canter is easier! Carlos easy counter canter side is the side he least likes doing the lead change on.

  2. LOL...I bet I know who you're referring to in turnout, that is WAY annoying! Counter canter is fun, the more you do it, the better it gets! I was kind of surprised at how fast Pongo's improved with just a few days/week practicing it. I think much of it is them just figuring it out on their own and us staying back/out of the way!

    1. I have to remember to keep his hit inside and not let him go fast cause then lead changes happen lol!

Yes I am not sure why horses in pasture need to be turned out! And then she told me to go lunge inside - mind you people were riding and there was a beginner lesson on the line already... ugh!

  3. sounds like you had a better ride than i did lol. I really don't get people turning out pasture horses, unless they were cleaning the pasture, which I doubt.

  4. That sounds completely unfair and unthoughtful of the rider surely she could think about others that want to ride to or is it just me that thinks that?

  5. Good for you in the no stirrups pledge! That was my plan and will be again if my horse is ever sound. I too do not want to be at work... which is why I'm taking a few minutes to stop and read some blogs :)

  8. Thats so frustrating that someone would turn horses out in a riding area. Major props for doing no stirrup work, your motivation is enviable.

  9. Ugh. I need to do that instead of just hacking around and petting Cuna. It would be super productive.

  11. Good work on the counter canter. I have never tried to do it before but it sounds really difficult. Good work on the no stirrups. Im used to riding bareback all the time so no stirrups is pretty easy for me. But when i first started it was hell.
