Who knew...

I had a lesson today and despite being a "simple" exercise, it was a great schooling.

Grabbed Henry and tacked up... hopped on and then got to warming up. My trainer was supposed to have a beginner lesson so I was going to flat while she taught it and then she was going to do me over fences... the lesson was late so I got a flat and OF lesson.

Ran through my paces on the flat as the eventing trainer was jumping her horse over some GIANT jumps. My trainer was helping her and randomly would call out things to me ha! It was all good though.

Then it was my turn. We warmed up over a panel, then my trainer made is a little bigger vertical with a ground poll on each side. Basically I was doing a figure 8 with a jump in the middle. Also it was going the short way of the arena, not the long way so it was a tight turn. I had to really sit up, steer and plan ahead... who knew those things could be so hard! :) Oh yeah and perfect lead changes in there too.

Henry was great when I rode him well... he even got praise from my trainer.

Rough drawing.. sorry!
looks so much smaller from the back on a 16.2 hand horse ha!

Cooled out Henry as the little girl took her lesson... I helped by showing her how to post at the walk and two point :) lol

Cheeeeese!

Herny gets tomorrow off, hack Friday and lesson Saturday.

If I can get the money together our first show will be in Feb :) Bring on the show season!

  2. The simple exercises always seem to become the hardest for whatever reason. Glad to hear that Henry was awesome!! And to hear that your first show might be coming up!!!! I want pics! :-)

  4. That looks really, really fun! Sounds like he was being fabulous too. I think our first show will be in March/April. February is looking like it's not going to happen at this point.

(Sorry 1st deleted comment had the wrong account tied to it!)

  6. Oh man, looks like you guys have come a long way since the last time I checked in on you! (just figured out how to follow your blog via google, I am an idiot! I now wish I had used google blogger instead of wordpress... but oh well. love the new head banner pic of the family though, gorgeous!)

I can't wait to show either- if I can also get the money together... ha. I'm hoping for a March start. Good luck though!

  7. The short end of our arena is really short, so I feel your pain. You really have to guide the horse and make sure his/her eye is on the fence. They are always the hardest lessons for me as I want to dive in after the jump to make the turn. My trainer makes me halt straight a lot after them to reiterate the point. It also seems like it is harder to find a distance, too!

  8. This exercise would be great for Dandy and I but man would it be hard for us! Not only would we have to get the leads but the bending and the turning would be crazy difficult.

But oh showing. I can't wait either! And I can't wait to hear about your first show of the year.

  9. Is it just me or is 2-point at the walk harder than any other gait? I might have to steal that exercise - there's not much I can do in my small arena but I think this would be doable. Thanks!

  13. That looks like a good jumping exercise. I understand how jumps look small on big horses! My instructor had me do some jumps then when I saw the video afterwards I was surprised how how high they were. lol
